Truth, Trust & Talking Science: Communicating in a Skeptical World

In today’s information-saturated environment, healthcare professionals face a growing challenge: how do we effectively communicate complex scientific information to patients who are increasingly skeptical? This question has become even more critical in our post-pandemic world.

The Communication Gap in Healthcare

When it comes to medical information—particularly around vaccines—there’s a significant perception gap between healthcare providers and patients. According to Dr. Varun Shetty, adult intensivist and pediatrician, one of the biggest mismatches is simply that “patients did not think they had enough information on vaccines” while “we as physicians always think we are providing all the necessary information.”

This disconnect creates a foundation for misunderstanding and mistrust that can be difficult to overcome.

Finding Reliable Information in a Sea of Noise

With the overwhelming amount of information available, how can both healthcare professionals and patients find reliable sources?

Dr. Shetty offers practical guidance:

“All sources of information are not equal, even if they sound confident—especially if they sound confident.”

He recommends seeking out specialists in their field of practice and looking for consensus among healthcare professionals rather than relying on individual opinions. Organizations that publish consensus guidelines—like the American Academy of Pediatrics—offer the most reliable information because they bring together scientists, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to evaluate the literature and make evidence-based recommendations.

Building Trust When Opinions Differ

When faced with vaccine hesitancy or medical misinformation, the traditional fact-based approaches often fall short. Instead, Dr. Shetty emphasizes:

“My first goal is to build trust. I am not trying to convince them of literature that I am convinced of in the first go. All I’m trying to do is listen and try to build trust.”

Some effective communication strategies include:

  • Using presumptive language (“They are due for these vaccines” rather than “Do you want the vaccine?”)
  • Expressing probabilities in accessible terms (like “1 in 100 people” rather than percentages or statistical terms)
  • Acknowledging concerns without judgment
  • Finding common ground in wanting the best health outcomes

The Emotional Component of Medical Decisions

As Dr. Liang Emlet points out, we all make decisions based on “a little bit of emotion, a little bit of tradition, and a little bit of new knowledge.” Acknowledging the emotional aspect of medical decision-making helps create space for more productive conversations.

Even healthcare professionals like Dr. Liang Emlet admit to having concerns about new treatments: “I was scared for the vaccine… I sat and read the papers again and again, and when the data accumulated to enough where I felt comfortable, you pulled the trigger.”

Moving Forward Together

The key to effective science communication isn’t about winning arguments—it’s about maintaining relationships and continuing conversations. Dr. Shetty reminds us that building individual connections with patients is paramount: “When that individual connection happens, all of the other stuff will melt away and they will listen to what you have to say.”

As healthcare professionals, we have both the privilege and responsibility to be updated on evidence, understand the data we’re reading, and translate complex information using effective communication strategies that ensure patients feel heard and empowered to make informed decisions.

The Bottom Line

In a world of medical misinformation and increasing skepticism, the answer isn’t more facts—it’s better relationships. By focusing on building trust, acknowledging concerns, and communicating clearly, healthcare professionals can bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and patient understanding.
