Enhancing Patient Care Through Communication: Insights from Dr. Bradley Block

In the fast-paced world of healthcare, enhancing patient care through communication is often overlooked in favor of technical skills. Yet effective communication may be the key to better patient outcomes and satisfaction. In this enlightening episode of the Transforming Healthcare Coaching podcast, host Lillian Liang Emlet sits down with Dr. Bradley Block, private practice otolaryngologist and host of “The Physician’s Guide to Doctoring” podcast, to explore how enhancing patient care through communication might be the most underrated skill in medicine.

Enhancing Patient Care Through Better Communication Skills

“We think of these traits as being ingrained, like you’re either born with it or you’re not,” explains Dr. Block, reflecting on his own journey from communication novice to committee chair for Patient Satisfaction at ENT and Allergy Associates, one of the largest physician-owned ENT practices in the country.

The good news? Communication skills can be developed at any stage of your career. Dr. Block candidly shares his transformation: “It wasn’t something that I developed until recently, until I came to the realization that it was a skill that I was deficient in, but could get better at.”

Patient Satisfaction Myths Debunked

Perhaps the most enlightening part of the conversation tackles common misconceptions about patient satisfaction. For busy clinicians constantly watching the clock, this insight is particularly valuable:

“They assume that if you spend more time with the patient, it’ll improve patient satisfaction. And that’s not it,” Dr. Block states emphatically. “They want to be heard. They want to be understood. They want to be seen for more than just the sum of their symptoms and their pathology.”

The solution isn’t necessarily longer appointments but more meaningful ones. As Dr. Block explains, “You have to use that time wisely. You have to use that time methodically and efficiently, but it doesn’t necessarily mean more time.”

Communication Techniques for Enhancing Patient Care

Dr. Block offers several practical communication techniques that require minimal time but yield significant results:

  1. Notice eye color: “Look patients in the eye long enough to notice their eye color. If you haven’t, you haven’t looked them in the eye long enough for them to know that you’re not just buried in your computer.”
  2. Express with your face: “The upper half of the face is really where most of the expressions come from… try to make it a little more expressive.”
  3. Acknowledge the whole person: “Are they wearing a necklace with something interesting on it? Earrings? A shirt with a saying? Just that simple expression, that simple question, and then you get onto the visit.”
  4. Compassion over empathy: Rather than mentally putting yourself in the patient’s emotional situation (which can lead to burnout), practice compassion—recognizing their struggle and responding with kindness without absorbing their emotional state.

Leadership Through Connection

The same principles for enhancing patient care through communication apply to leading healthcare teams. Dr. Block shares how creating connections outside the workplace—like hosting a staff pool party—transformed his team dynamics. “They wanted to hang out with each other in a social setting… now I’ve met some of their kids. I have faces to names, and it’s just going to help the dynamics so much more.”

For leaders, he recommends: “Know more about these people so that you can ask them about it so that they feel like you care about them and not just whether they did their job. They’re going to be more likely to do their job if you demonstrate that you care about them.”

Staying Engaged in Your Career

While clinical expertise is essential, Dr. Block reveals that leadership and communication work provide the intellectual stimulation that keeps him energized after years in practice. For healthcare professionals at any stage, he recommends: “Always keep your hand or your toes in something else. You gotta have something that stimulates you and helps you be a better you outside, or something that you really love.”

Moving Forward with Enhanced Communication

Whether you’re struggling with difficult patient conversations or looking to enhance team dynamics, investing in communication skills pays dividends in both patient outcomes and professional satisfaction. Enhancing patient care through communication doesn’t require extensive training—it starts with small, intentional changes to how you interact with patients and colleagues.

Dr. Block’s journey reminds us that continuous improvement applies not just to clinical knowledge but to how we connect with patients and colleagues. As he puts it, reflecting on a Jewish New Year concept: “A year not spent growing is a wasted year.”
