Pride Month in Healthcare: Leading with Authenticity and Inclusion

Being your authentic self in healthcare isn’t always easy – but it’s essential. Whether you’re navigating patient relationships, team dynamics, or leadership challenges, your identity matters. This Pride Month, let’s talk about how to create more inclusive healthcare environments for everyone.

The Reality of Identity in Healthcare

Ever wonder what it’s like to constantly calculate how much of yourself to show at work? Klaus Grim, emergency medicine PA and coach, shares his honest perspective on navigating healthcare as a gay professional. “I grew up in a time where there were still people not very comfortable with sexuality that was beyond what they’re comfortable with,” he reflects.

The truth is, many healthcare professionals from underrepresented communities face this daily balancing act – being authentic while staying safe, building relationships while maintaining boundaries.

Why Inclusion Matters More Than Ever

Here’s what healthcare leaders need to understand: your team members don’t want to be seen only through the lens of their identity. As Klaus puts it, “We just want to be seen as the other colleagues… and not see us as anything different just because of that one identity.”

But inclusion goes deeper than just treating everyone the same. It’s about:

  • Recognizing that assumptions can hurt, even when well-intentioned
  • Understanding that your minority team members likely worked extra hard to get where they are
  • Creating environments where people feel safe to speak up about boundary violations

Simple Ways to Be A Better Ally

Want to support your LGBTQIA+ colleagues but not sure where to start? Klaus suggests keeping it simple:

Ask, don’t assume. Instead of guessing someone’s relationship status or family situation, try neutral language like “Do you have a partner?” or “Tell me about your family.”

Listen without judgment. When team dynamics seem off, slow down and really hear what people are saying. The solution might be simpler than you think.

Recognize humanity first. A simple “I see you” or acknowledgment during Pride Month can mean more than you realize.

The Business Case for Authenticity

Beyond doing what’s right, diversity makes healthcare better. When your team reflects the communities you serve, patients feel more comfortable opening up – leading to better care and stronger relationships.

Klaus sees this firsthand: “I get many patients that identify as LGBTQ and can automatically pretty much tell by my mannerisms… it creates a stronger relationship and allows them to open up more so that they can actually get the treatment that they deserve.”

For Those Still Finding Their Way

If you’re listening and don’t feel safe being your full self at work yet – you’re not alone. Klaus’s advice? “You deserve a career in healthcare.” There are allies and communities waiting to support you, even if you haven’t found them locally yet.

The journey to authenticity takes time, and that’s okay. Focus on finding even one person who sees and supports you as you are.

Walking Proud Every Day

“I walk proud every day,” Klaus shares. That’s the goal – not just during Pride Month, but year-round. When healthcare professionals can show up authentically, everyone wins: patients receive better care, teams work more effectively, and we create the inclusive environments our communities need.

The Bottom Line: Pride Month reminds us that healthcare is stronger when everyone can bring their authentic selves to work. It starts with seeing each other as whole humans first – and that’s a lesson that applies all year long.
